Small gas discovery southeast of the Snøhvit field in the Barents Sea - 7121/8-1

Statoil Petroleum AS, operator of production licence 849, has concluded the drilling of wildcat well 7121/8-1. The well was drilled about 25 km southeast of the Snøhvit field in the Barents Sea. The well proved gas.

The primary exploration target for the well was to prove petroleum in Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks in the Stø formation.

The secondary exploration target was to prove petroleum in Late Triassic reservoir rocks in the Fruholmen and Snadd formation.

Well 7121/8-1 encountered a 23-metre gas column in the Stø formation in sandstone with moderate reservoir quality. The gas/water contact was proven at 1902 metres below the sea surface. Several intervals of water-filled sandstone with moderate reservoir quality were encountered in the secondary exploration target in the Fruholmen and Snadd formation.

Preliminary estimates place the size of the discovery between 2 and 3 billion standard cubic metres (Sm3) of recoverable gas. The discovery will be considered as a tie-in to existing infrastructure on the Snøhvit field.

 The well was not formation-tested, but extensive data acquisition and sampling have been carried out.

This is the first exploration well in production licence 849. The licence was awarded in APA 2015.

Well 7121/8-1 was drilled to a vertical depth of 2228 metres below the sea surface, and was terminated in the Snadd formation in the Upper Triassic.

Water depth at the site is 378 metres. The well has been permanently plugged and abandoned.

Well 7121/8-1 was drilled by the Songa Enabler which will now drill wildcat well 7325/4-1 in production licence 855 in the Barents Sea, where Statoil Petroleum AS is the operator.
