Babcock, the through-life defence specialist, has won an initial contract from the Republic of Korea’s Submarine Design Team (SDT) to design the weapon handling and launch system (WHLS) for their new submarine. Under the contract, Babcock’s Marine Division will provide design services to help integrate the WHLS based upon the principles supplied by Babcock to other world class navies.
The contract award follows a number of years’ co-operation between Babcock, the Republic of Korea Navy, the Defense Acquisition and Programme Administration, and the Submarine Design Team.
Babcock has extensive experience and expertise in the provision of weapons handling and launch systems using modern technology, and is a key supplier to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). As well as being a major supplier to the Astute programme and Spanish and Australian submarine programmes, it provides torpedo countermeasure launchers for submarine and surface ship applications. The company also supports all current UK submarine classes, the Collins class in Australia, and Victoria class in Canada.
