Baker Hughes delivered comprehensive project management on first ever integrated project in the UK North Sea
Thursday, Jul 18, 2013
A London-based UK client planning to drill a 9,000-ft (2,743-m) exploration well in the central North Sea was constrained by a shortage of internal resources. Lacking operations personnel and an Aberdeen base, the client could not justify the addition of staff and infrastructure for the one-well project.
Because the client wished to retain overall control of the project, they ruled out the traditional turnkey approach, ultimately choosing Baker Hughes as the project management and integrated services contractor based on commitment, flexibility, willingness to contract thirdparty services when necessary, and overall competitive pricing.
Baker Hughes worked under a lumpsum contract, accepting some capped risk on the operation while providing directional drilling, measurement-whiledrilling services, bits, fluids, coring, mud-logging, and fishing/abandonment tools technologies. Baker Hughes also provided office space in Aberdeen for a dedicated project manager (who reported to the client’s project director), wellsite supervisors, and the client’s offshore representative. This was the first project managed by an integrated services provider in the North Sea.
